Artist Bio

Neometa_Julia Shu_artist profile pic_portrait.jpg

NeoMeta (Julia Shu) is a transdisciplinary multimedia artist and experimental researcher from Kyiv, based in London. She received her MA in Art and Science with Distinction at Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London (CSM, UAL, 2024).

Rooted in digital arts, her art/science practice combines diverse disciplines including:

  • INSTALLATION & SCULPTURE

  • NEW MEDIA & SOUND ARTS

  • PERFORMANCE & INTERACTIVITY

  • BIOART & LIVING SYSTEMS

By blending physical and digital, real and imagined realms, NeoMeta creates multisensory, interactive installations, live performances and mixed realities, treating living, found, and discarded as equal collaborators.

Learning from living systems, she explores the boundless potential of regeneration in Nature to ignite a spark of hope for a future where all beings such as animals, plants, machines, virtual entities and others can flourish in a harmonious synergy within diverse ecosystems. NeoMeta's immersive experiences encourage reflection on the coexistence of scientific and indigenous knowledge, fostering empathy and kindness towards nurturing a just world for all.

*NeoMeta: my artist name embodying a fusion of artistic expression & scientific inquiry

  • ‘neo’, from the Greek (νέος) – “new”

  • ‘meta’ (μετά) – “beyond", “transcending”

Her practice-based research is exploratory and is embedded in creative practice, focusing on the living systems' behaviour, nonhuman agency, bioacoustics, digital sensing technologies and interspecies communication. Julia has written her master's thesis on Nonhuman Agency and was published in the Journal of Ecology by the British Ecological Society (Feb 2024), and in the Science Magazine of Imperial College London (Aug 2023). She recently participated in the Art & Science Symposium at Central Saint Martins (CSM, Jun 2024) and continues her work in interspecies communication and digital listening with a paper on Slime Mould Sonification that will be presented in the S+T+ARTS Symposium at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Barcelona.
